Ce titre rappelle à son biographe le propos suivant tenu par un malade enfermé à Bedlam: «Tout le monde me prend pour un fou, – disait-il, – moi j’ai la même opinion de tout le monde; malheureusement la majorité n’est pas de mon côté». Cela explique très bien le titre d’Owen et jette une grande lumière sur la question. Nous sommes convaincus que la portée de cette comparaison a échappé au sévère biographe. Il a voulu seulement insinuer qu’Owen était fou – et nous ne voulons pas le contredire, – mais cela n’est pas une raison pour penser que tout le monde ne l’est pas. Si Owen était fou – ce n’est nullement parce que le monde le pensait tel, et que lui-même le pensait de tout le monde. Mais bien parce qu’Owen – connaissant qu’il demeurait dans une maison des aliénés – parlait soixante ans de suite aux malades – comme s’ils étaient parfaitement sains. Le nombre des malades n’y fait...

We, being the friends of Bakunin from our youth, and the editors of the Russian journal alluded to in your article, we solemnly protest against this calumny, warmed up from former times, and protected by anonymity. The assertion concerning Bakunin is as false and absurd as that relating to our journal. Our journal is no secret, anybody can easily ascertain its tendencies. Williams, in the letter inserted in your esteemed journal (November 15), tries to smooth the bad impression produced on public opinion by your very truthful and beautiful correspondence concerning the Russian Universities. He says,—«The two main grievances, of which the students, had to complain at the outset were the abolition of their uniforms, and the imposition of certain tuition fees». The first assertion proves that Mr. Williams did not attentively read your correspondence; the second, that he does not understand the state of things in Russia, in spite of his having travelled in that country. The uniforms were worn by order of the government, and. during the reign of Nicholas the rules regarding them were so stringent that the uniform was for the students rather a subject of hatred than of love. Certainly, they did not much trouble themselves about the abolition of it, though they knew that in the present time it was abolished in order to excuse any aggression of the police against the students, who had the ...

Месяцы проходили – и ни одного слова о том, о чем хотелось говорить. …А между тем я тогда едва начинал приходить в себя, оправляться после ряда страшных событий, несчастий, ошибок. История последних годов моей жизни представлялась мне яснее и яснее, и я с ужасом видел, что ни один человек, кроме меня, не знает ее и что с моей смертью умрет и истина. Я решился писать; но одно воспоминание вызывало сотни других, все старое, полузабытое воскресало – отроческие мечты, юношеские надежды, удаль молодости, тюрьма и ссылка [217]  – эти ранние несчастия, не оставившие никакой горечи на душе, пронесшиеся, как вешние грозы, освежая и укрепляя своими ударами молодую жизнь. Я не имел сил отогнать эти тени, – пусть они светлыми сенями, думалось мне, встречают в книге, как было на самом деле.
