    1. Russian serfdom (Русское крепостничество)
    Входимость: 6. Размер: 61кб.
Часть текста: of the century». Gervinus The time has come when Russian serfdom should be made, if not an European, at least an English question. London, which has become the permanent oecumenical seat of council for all movements of liberty, emancipation, progression, can scarcely remain indifferent to such a question as that of white slavery in Russia[1]. White slavery in Russia has been too little attacked: perhaps because it has not been defended with the fierce tenacity of Transatlantic slaveholders. For it is to be remarked, that although many of the rich landholders in Russia passionately desire the maintenance of serfdom, no one is found to justify the institution ‒ no one to undertake its defence: not even the government. It is nevertheless a question of capital importance. Indeed, the whole Russian Question, for the present at least, may be said to be included in that of serfdom. Russia cannot make a step in advance until she has abolished slavery. The serfdom of the Russian peasant is the servitude of ...

Часть текста: condemned to death in Saxony and in Austria for the revolution of Dresden and for his participation in the affairs of Prague. If he were serving to-day as a soldier in the Caucasus, that condition would be the continuation of his sufferings; but we consider ourselves better informed than «F. M.», in representing that he languishes in the dungeons of St. -Petersburg. In 1847, Mr. Bakunin was expelled from France by M. Guizot for having, on the anniversary of the Polish revolution, called Nicholas «the assassin and the executioner of Poland». «F. M.» ought to know that Russian agents are not authorised to employ such expressions, and he had only to refer to the reports of the sittings of the French Chamber of Deputies to bend himself before Bakunin, if political courage can inspire him with respect. The calumny which «F. M.» has raised is by no means new. Ever since there have been revolutionary Russians, there have been people calling them Russian agents, with a view to ruin them in public opinion. This calumny has already made its appearance in a German gazette, which did not hesitate to call Madame George Sand to attest it. Well! Madame George Sand in a letter which has been made public, has given а formal contradiction to this matter, saying that she had proofs to the contrary. On this subject «F. M.» has only to consult the «Reforme» of 1848. What is «F. M.»? In the meanwhile, sir, and awaiting the solution of this question, we beg you to insert this declaration. Ivan Golovin, Naturalised Russian refugee. A. Herzen, Russian refugee. In the name of the Central Polish Democratic Committee, adhering completely to all the expressions contained in this declaration I subscribe myself. Stanislas Worcell, Member of The Central Polish Democratic Committee, and of ...
    3. Mr. Alexander Herzen — to the editor of "The Globe" (Александр Герцен ‒ издателю "The Globe")

Часть текста: издателю "The Globe") MR. ALEXANDER HERZEN — TO THE EDITOR OF «THE GLOBE» Cholmondely Lodge, Richmond, 23 d. oct. 1855. Sir, — it was not until to-day that I had the pleasure of reading the favourable mention made in your esteemed paper on the 15-th instant, of the English translation of my Memoirs. While thanking you, I am anxious to say that the title given by myself and repeated by the «Révue des Deux Mondes», was «Prison and Exile». The editor of a German translation (Hoffmann and Campe, Hamburg), thought it necessary to add the words «in Siberia», which are not to be found anywhere in my own writing of the title. The editor of an English translation has done the same thing. The observation made in your journal is perfectly correct. I only went as far as the Uralian Mountains. I have never been in Siberia. But the title rests entirely on the responsibility of the editors, and I avail myself immediately of this opportunity of saying so. — Accept, etc. etc. Alexander Herzen. P. S. You will oblige me if you will publish this letter, and you will oblige me doubly by having it translated into English. Unfortunately I know the language too imperfectly to write it.

Часть текста: an end to the accusations which are published against me in your paper, respecting the title of my memoirs. «My Exile in Siberia», I hope you will not refuse to insert the following declarations: — First — I have directed personally the publication of two volumes of my memoirs in the Russian language, under the title of «Prison and Exile». Second — I have merely given my authorisation to their translation into English, German and French, and that is all the part I have taken in the editions which have appeared in those languages. Third — immediately after the publication of the English edition, I have protested against the addition to the title of the words «In Siberia», as it has been declared in your columns by Messrs Hurst and Blacket, who have altered the title of the book in consequence of my protestations. I have besides protested publicly in the «Globe», as it may be seen by refferring to the columns of that paper. Fourth ‒ I have received no communication of the book before it was published and advertised, this I positively assert, and if needed, I have no doubt Messrs Hurst and Blacket will not hesitate to confirm it. I remain, Sir, your obedient servant. Alexander Herzen. Cholmondely Lodge, Richmond, nov. 29.
