Every existence is interesting; if not on account of the person, yet on account of the country, the epoch in which he lives. Man likes to penetrate into the inward life of another; he likes to touch the most delicate chord of another heart, to watch its beatings and penetrate its secrets, in order to compare, to verify, to seek a justification, a consolation, a proof of conformity. Memoirs, however, can be tiresome, the life of which they speak can be poor, insignificant. Then do not read them; that is the heaviest punishment to be inflicted upon a book. And as to that, no special right for writing memoirs can avail. Часть текста: to-day that I had the pleasure of reading the favourable mention made in your esteemed paper on the 15-th instant, of the English translation of my Memoirs. While thanking you, I am anxious to say that the title given by myself and repeated by the «Révue des Deux Mondes», was «Prison and Exile». The editor of a German translation (Hoffmann and Campe, Hamburg), thought it necessary to add the words «in Siberia», which are not to be found anywhere in my own writing of the title. The editor of an English translation has done the same thing. The observation made in your journal is perfectly correct. I only went as far as the Uralian Mountains. I have never been in Siberia. But the title rests entirely on the responsibility of the editors, and I avail myself immediately of this opportunity of saying so. — Accept, etc. etc. Alexander Herzen. P. S. Plat — that I can not write in any other language... than English. I spoke about the Russian lesson with the young man, who was Sunday with the new Gleb Savinoff by us. He had not too much time, being employed in a great commercial business, but he proposes to come every week to you, to pass an evening, in teaching you the Russian. He desires, en retour, to improve himself in the English and that is all what he requests. I can come to see your translation Wednesday at 5—6. It is a «schmollend» article on our publications in the Augsb Zeut and the minister in Dresden has published himself my letter. I can not accept your ideas on the subject of France.
