Незаконный сын Ивана Яковлева, я ношу не фамилию моего отца, а ту фамилию, которую он счел нужным мне дать. Я родился в Москве, учился в университете этого города и всю свою жизнь, вплоть до 1847 г., провел в России. Русский по рождению, русский по воспитанию и, позвольте прибавить, вопреки или скорое благодаря теперешнему положению дел, русский всем своим сердцем, я считаю своим долгом требовать в Европе признания моего русского происхождения, что никогда не ставилось даже под сомнение в России ни со стороны...

Издателю "The Daily News") LIBERTY IN RUSSIA TO THE EDITOR OF «THE DAILY NEWS» Sir, — I have before me a letter from St. Petersburg, containing the disgraceful details of the condemnation of the celebrated writer, N. Tchernischevski, the director of the Contemporain, and one of the most distinguished literary men of the day in Russia. N. Tchernisctievski was arrested nearly two years ago, and has been imprisoned ever since. After a secret inquiry he was tried by the senate, without any defence whatever. The government has published nothing respecting the cause of the trial, and for a very good reason. There was nothing to bring forward except the opinions expressed in censured articles, the influence of Tchernischevski over the young men, and his pretended participation in a ciandestine publication. They wanted to get rid of a clever and ardent antagonist, and he was accordingly sentenced to seven years' hard labour in Siberia, and to transportation for life. This is not all On the 31 st May, Tchernischevski was led forth in the middle of the day into a public square in St. Petersburg. His sentence was read to him, he was forced tokneel, his sword was broken above his head, and he was then put in the pillory. A young girl threw some flowers to him, she was arrested. A well known literary man cried: «Adieu, my friend!»... he is in prison. Like a worthy son, the emperor Alexander is reviving the memory of his father. Why does not Germany, which tries with so much avidity to seize upon everything that belongs to Holstein, demand the extradition of this ill-omened family, the misfortune of Russia? A. H.»[177] Ну-с, вот и пошло. Во-первых, сегодня статья Джонса в «People's Paper» — под загл<авием>: «Al. H n, Russian exile» — совершенно в мою пользу. Во-вторых, вчера Комитет решил avec acclamation[178] от Комитета напечатать его оправдание выбора... Словом, если б Голов<ин> нарочно хотел мне сделать reclam'у, не мог бы удачнее. Теперь ждут добрые люди не дождутся, когда этот русский exile явится на трибуну. — Вероятно, будет и не без свисту (от Гол<овина> я даже жду больше, однако же меры взяты). И все-то это сделалось помимо меня, я спокойно спал в Тыкнаме, а тут эдакое случилось. Ну, а уж, я думаю, и Щепкин за патриотизм спасибо скажет — теперь сижу и думаю, какую же фигу им рассказать. Ехала или едет какая-то барыня; ну, я ей в пояс: «Вот, мол, книжку Марье Каспаровне». — «Ну, говорит, отчего же, книжку возьмем». А холод достигает до нарушения приличий. Я вам пришлю статью Комитета — она так красива, завтра будет пропечатана. Голов <ин> повесится или меня повесит; а вот и Ахимка....
