Другие эмиграции мало сближались с нею; разница в манере, в habitus’e удерживала их на некотором расстоянии; французская дерзость не имеет ничего общего с немецкой грубостью. Отсутствие общепринятой светскости, тяжелый школьный доктринаризм, излишняя фамильярность, излишнее простодушие немцев затрудняли с ними сношения непривыкших людей. Они и сами не очень сближались… считая себя, с одной стороны, гораздо выше прочих по научному развитию и, с другой – чувствуя перед другими неприятную неловкость провинциала в столичном салоне и чиновника в аристократическом кругу. Внутри немецкая эмиграция представляла такую же рассыпчатость, как и ее родина. Общего плана у немцев не было, единство их поддерживалось взаимной ненавистью и злым преследованием друг друга. Лучшие из немецких изгнанников чувствовали это. Люди энергические, люди чистые, люди умные, как К. Шурц, как А. Виллих, как Рейхенбах, уезжали в Америку. Люди кроткие по нраву прятались за делами, за лондонской далью, как Фрейлиграт. Остальные, исключая двух-трех вожаков, раздирали друг друга на части с неутомимым остервенением, не щадя ни семейных тайн, ни самых уголовных обвинений. Сведения о неизвестных произведениях Герцена заимствованы из его писем[52] и сочинений, а также из мемуаров и переписки современников, из следственных материалов и периодической печати. Публикуемый перечень дает возможность не только убедиться в том, насколько велика утраченная часть творческого наследия Герцена, но в какой-то степени восстановить содержание многих не дошедших до нас произведений. Работа эта может служить и своего рода ориентиром в целенаправленных поисках утраченных трудов Герцена. В обзор включены также творческие замыслы Герцена, упоминаемые в различных источниках; в ряде случаев трудно, а порой и совсем невозможно утверждать, что тот или иной замысел не был реализован писателем. В сущности, авторское изложение неосуществленного замысла и передача содержания безвозвратно утраченного произведения не имеют значительного качественного различия. Для удобства пользования обзором замыслы каждый раз отмечаются перед заголовком значком *. Вне настоящего обзора остаются сведения о замыслах Герцена, недостаточно конкретно обозначенных. Таковы, например, программа статей для задуманного им в 1834 г. журнала (I, 59—61); высказанное намерение записать «характеристические подробности», слышанные от «очевидца и долею актера в трагедии следствия по 14 декабря» — А. Pulsky a été inséré le 1 Mai dans l’Eclectic Review — je ne l'ai pas lu, il a écrit encore deux notices pour le The Athenæum et pour l’Atlas (journal de Kossuth). L'Homme a inséré trois fois des fragments, maintenant nous avons fait des notices pour le People's Paper, pour les journaux allemands et pour les journaux de New York — j'écrirai encore à J. Frœbel pour les feuilles de l'Amérique. Vous verrez par l'annonce que j'ai aussi écrit un article russe. Il me semble que votre ouvrage a une telle portée et une telle importance qu'on ne peut assez faire du bruit; car il faut le dire qu'avec toutes les alliances et toute la facilité des communications — on ne sait absolument rien en Angleterre du mouvement intellectuel (sérieux) en France et en Allemagne. Guizot for having, on the anniversary of the Polish revolution, called Nicholas «the assassin and the executioner of Poland». «F. M.» ought to know that Russian agents are not authorised to employ such expressions, and he had only to refer to the reports of the sittings of the French Chamber of Deputies to bend himself before Bakunin, if political courage can inspire him with respect. The calumny which «F. M.» has raised is by no means new. Ever since there have been revolutionary Russians, there have been people calling them Russian agents, with a view to ruin them in public opinion. This calumny has already made its appearance in a German gazette, which did not hesitate to call Madame George Sand to attest it. Well! Madame George Sand in a letter which has been made public, has given а formal contradiction to this matter, saying that she had proofs to the contrary. On this subject «F. M.» has only to consult the «Reforme» of 1848. What is «F. M.»? In the meanwhile, sir, and awaiting the solution of this question, we beg you to insert this declaration.
